I’m no big fan of Zazzle, the print-on-demand supercompany that allows you to create everything from custom tees to skateboards. I dare say they may have spread themselves a bit thin — the quality of their prints has always been on the questionable side. Since one of these prints costs just about as much (or more) as a much-hardier screen printed tee, I’ve never had much reason to turn my head in their direction. (Keep this statement in mind when you read the final sentence of this post.)
Hence, why I was a tad skeptical when I learned of LABz, a project under the Zazzle name. I was surprised to find not only a clean, uncluttered interface, but a display of some absolutely fantastic professional artwork. (Quite unlike the pages and pages of crappy JPGs flooding the Zazzle marketplace.) Check out the iPhone cases for some examples.
Of course, being the t-shirt aficionado I am, I was more drawn to the LABz “T-Shirt of the Week.” These limited-edition shirts feature stunning artwork accentuated with advanced printing methods, including the use of high-density inks and foils, among others. And they’re printed on American Apparel! So far, there have only been three LABz designs — the first two are sold out and can’t even be clicked on, annoyingly enough — and it’s safe to say that I’m impressed.
This lovely number, entitled “Thought Progress”, was the previous T-Shirt of the Week and is no longer available for purchase. Nevertheless, I feel compelled to highlight it because it’s so outrageously different from what I’ve come to expect from the Zazzle name. The illustration is a painting by Texas artist 2H, and the painterly quality translates perfectly to the print.
“Group Shot” by Mildred is the current shirt of the week, up for purchase until January 17th. This shirt features a flashy oversized print with some characters accented by flock. The logo on the back is also a flock print. The art style and color scheme aren’t really my thing, but it’s still a great tee.
These shirts are a reasonable $17.95 each and are available in men’s and women’s American Apparel tees.
