T-Shirt Brands Pitch in to Help Japan, Pt. 3

By Ivy

They just keep coming!  While I support direct donations to nonprofits, I definitely won’t fault you for contributing through one of these excellent tees.

Threadless finally released their Japan charity tee, a lovely simple piece by Jason Yang.  100% of the net proceeds from this shirt will go to the American Red Cross Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Fund.  But that’s not all — they also launched a tee in support for the people of Christchurch, New Zealand, who were also recently struck by a natural disaster.  25% of the proceeds from this shirt will go to Architecture for Humanity.  Both of these shirts will run you $20.

Goodjoe is a company known for contributing to good causes, and this is no exception.  100% of the proceeds from their great Japanese crane shirt (inspired by Paper Cranes for Japan) will go to the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund.  If you like this tee, order fast — it’ll be gone by Monday!  Only $12 for a preorder.

Print-on-demand company Skreened has set up a Red Cross Relief for Japan gallery, which designers can submit to.  $5 from each shirt and up to $7 from the designers’ commissions are donated to the Red Cross.  This is a great thing to try if you have some design skill, and want to put it to good use.

This shirt from the Salvation Army is designed by Hydro74, one of the tee community’s most well-known artists.  100% of the proceeds will go towards relief efforts in Japan.  To be honest I highly dislike supporting the Salvation Army in any way, even for a cause like this — I’m wary of giving any of my money to an organization that does pretty questionable things for the sake of religion.  It’s a beautiful design (Hydro74 can do no wrong), but if you’re planning to donate, I’d urge you to give your money to a charity such as the Red Cross instead.  This shirt costs $20 and is on preorder.

Seventh Ink recently released their own Japan relief tee.  They don’t provide any information as to how much they’re donating, but you do get the option to donate to either the Red Cross, Salvation Army, or Doctors Without Borders.  (Doctors Without Borders is another fantastic secular nonprofit that would put your donation to great use.)  Honestly I’m not sure I like the huge “JAPAN RELIEF” on this shirt typeset in what looks suspiciously like Arial.  Poor font choices aside, I think the great illustration is more than powerful enough to convey the message without extraneous text.  Also on preorder till April 14th, this shirt costs $24.

Karmaloop hits it out of the park with a great typography-based tee.  It gets the message across without beating you over the head with it, or without having to use a re-interpretation of the Japanese flag as a major part of its design (have you noticed a pattern in all the tees I’ve posted?). Karmaloop will donate 100% of the proceeds to the Red Cross.  It also comes in a girls’ version, and costs $20.

Paper Heart Clothing is donating all the proceeds from their sales to the Red Cross.  They don’t go into a lot of detail as to how much they are donating, so if you are the type who likes to know exactly where your money is going to, you’ll probably want to steer towards one of the other options.
