The culinary shirt masters at Pyknic recently made a huge overhaul to their site: they’ve got a fresh, ultra-professional look, a better-organized store, and a new ladies’ line called “Culinary Couture” which, as you might have guessed, I’m going to talk about briefly here. Us female t-shirt fans tend to be neglected when it comes to indie brands — understandable, as girl’s sizes represent an additional investment which more often than not fails to produce a good return — so it’s interesting to see Pyknic take the middle road by releasing a line especially for and targeted at women. As you might have guessed from the picture accompanying this paragraph, these designs are flowery, pink, and…well, girly. Which would kind of annoy me, as I dislike the all-too-common conflation of pink with the fairer sex (a conflation that, admittedly, will probably sell better than simply providing women’s sizes for the regular designs), but this line is just so well-designed. All of the tees relate to the food theme with a delicate, Victorian-tea-party look and a common color palette. I especially like “Entwined“, pictured above — I wouldn’t be caught wearing this even if you paid me (okay, maybe if you paid me a lot), but I can respect that Pyknic is trying to provide a quality line aimed at women. Most brands will just settle for throwing some of their crappiest designs on smaller shirts and call it a day.

Bear Annhilator recently (I think, I’ve been rather busy with course work over the past month) released a new line, and the “Jetpack” tee immediately caught my eye. Putting aside the fact that it’s a space-related tee, and I love me some space-related tees, it’s a superbly-designed shirt full of energy and vibe. While this is a common theme throughout Bear Annihilator’s offerings, what makes this piece stand out is its striking black/white/teal color scheme and its wonderful balance of detail and minimalism. Just enough detail to keep things interesting, without corrupting the simple cartoon style. Plus, it’s on a snazzy 50/50 American Apparel tee, and you can’t say no to that.
I chortled when I caught sight of the “Haters Gonna Hate” shirt. For the uninitiated, an artist at These Are Things originally created this amusing animation out of boredom, which skyrocketed to Internet stardom as a meme (think lolcats and demotivational posters). I always wondered about where the .gif came from, which is why I couldn’t help but laugh when I found out through a t-shirt. It seems like word has gotten around about the shirt, as the only remaining size is 2XL. Congrat to the artist, O, for his success!
