I’m going to try a new type of post starting today.
I stumble upon awesome tees every day, but to post about all of those shirts in a full-fledged blog would simply overload your RSS readers! To get around this, I’ll regularly put together “Shirtspotting” posts where I’ll highlight three shirts which have recently caught my eye.
I don’t see stuff from Jinx featured a lot on tee blogs, I don’t know if it’s because of the gaming-centric subject matter or what. Either way, with “Space Odyssey” they’ve proved that they are more than capable of pulling off an arty design. I’m an avid gamer and self-professed nerd, but even then I don’t find that Jinx’s bespectacled skull logo lends itself particularly well to a flattering t-shirt. This design changes that by giving the skull a more realistic style, and mashing it up in an eye-catching collage-style piece. The tilted angle and sharp contrast add a sense of drama, and the little sci-fi/astronomy details up the depth and visual interest. Overall, I really dig this shirt, which is also available in two other versions: a women’s v-neck, and a standard-fit t-shirt.

Today’s Tilteed offering, “DARKWATERFISHING“, is incredible in its haunting beauty. I’m not quite sure what is occurring in this eerie scene — the mermaid’s back appears to be cut open, exposing her spine, and from behind it a pair of arms hold out a fishing pole. It’s completely weird but that’s part of the charm. The art itself is just incredible and is an example of how artists can make one-color prints look absolutely mindblowing. I love how the ragged negative space on either side of the piece form the reflections/ripples on the ocean, and how these slowly start to warp and weave as they come closer to the mermaid’s tail under the water. The texture is great, too, from the subtle stippling making up the shading to the bright splotches in the sky.
I’d actually go for this tee, if it wasn’t for the fact that it wasn’t on a lemon shirt. It works with the design, but I’m just not a fan of wearing yellow tees. A shame, but don’t let that dissuade you should you not mind yellow as much!

I developed an obsession with the American Apparel tri-blends this summer thanks to the super soft, lightweight fabric that isn’t see-through. When I first saw Lead & Light‘s “Telemanipulation“, I admit this was the first thing I picked up on. Even if it wasn’t for this fact, though, this is still a superb design and representative of the gorgeous vintage-flavored design style of L&L. The composition is sublime; it’s perfectly balanced but given a bit of spice via the distressed texture and the multi-shade halftone filling the middle circles. The branding is subtle and works with the design. In fact, I’d say that this shirt wouldn’t look half as good without the little type at the bottom. Just beautiful.
