This man, is Bob. He was the person randomly selected from the list of all Tee-Junctions newsletter subscribers to win $100 in Threadless. We sat down (in a virtual, email kinda way) with Bob and this is what we learnt:
“1. In just 5 words, summarize yourself…
tired; not currently very clever
2. What’s the favourite t-shirt currently hanging in your wardrobe?
Hmm, I’ll say this one:

Welcome Squid Overlords by Feed Store ($20)
3. Any idea which Threadless t-shirts you’re going to get with the voucher?
None – I haven’t actually been following threadless recently, but I’m sure gonna start!
4. I can tell from the fact that you’re at University, wear glasses and have published lots of confusing sounding academic papers that you are smart. Enlighten the dunce that is me, what is “Making psycholinguistics musical: Self-paced reading time evidence for shared processing of linguistic and musical syntax.” all about?
I take some issue with the idea that people who publish confusing sounding academic papers are necessarily smart (though I do believe that glasses always imply intelligence). At any rate, this particular confusing sounding paper is basically looking for similarities in the way people process syntax in language (i.e., the relationships between words in sentences) and in music (i.e., the relationships between notes or chords in melodies). The idea is that understanding how these are related might help us understand how people process language and music in general. Also it’s sort of fun to make people read confusing sentences while listening to confusing melodies.
5. It’s hot today in New Zealand. Do you believe in Global Warming?
Yep. I also think (as I climb onto a small soap box) that temperature changes is probably not quite the right way to think about global warming. I mean, small changes in average temperature aren’t very noticeable, nor do they sound very dramatic. But the effects of global warming are a lot bigger than temperature – things like melting icebergs, more acidic oceans, etc. are really where the big (and dramatic/noticeable) problems are.
Rock on with your t-shirts and such,
/bob”
