Today’s brand is AlrightOK, an independent company run by designer Ryan K. Its motto is “Winners never sleep.” AOK was launched December 2008 and has attracted a lot of attention since then, for good reason! I’m in the love with AOK’s style and color choices, and would certainly pick up a few tees myself if they were offered in my size. Recently, Ryan released AlrightOK’s newest line, “Quietus”. Let’s take a closer look…
“Phase 1: Instill fear and the perceived need for protection.”
Thematically, the line is quite interesting in that it revolves around the growth of an totalitarian regime. Each shirt tells the story of a specific phase in its development, starting with Q1 (Want) above. This design introduces the “main character” of all three tees, a scary-lookin’ dude with a scythe and hockey mask. I like how it’s styled after a propaganda poster with dark, foreboding colors, which help reinforce the theme.
“Phase 2: Use fear to easily divide the masses.”
The second shirt, Q2 (Divide), is probably my favorite out of the three. I enjoy the composition and the style of the character — there’s a real sense of personality to this tee. The grungy background is a nice touch, offsetting the clean lines of the laughing skull.
Phase 3: Assume control once resolve has been weakened.
The shapes and color on the third tee, Q3 (Control), are just great. This design returns to the propaganda-like look, except this time the image emanates power and domination. I love the balance of red and white with the black background, and the way the diagonal stripes interact with the character and the checkered disk. Really admirable work.
