With Halloween coming up, I wanted to try to get in a horror-themed Exclusive Deal. I was really excited when DARK EARTH 666‘s Brandon Gallagher responded to my query, as this is a horror brand that deserves some exposure regardless of whether or not a coupon code is attached to it! DE666 is run by Brandon and another artist named Michael Shantz, both of whom I’m sure you’ve heard of if you’re familiar with the t-shirt design community. They’ve brought both of their distinctive art styles to the fore in DE666, culminating in a dark, macabre brand quite unlike anything else I’ve seen.
If you thought white tees couldn’t be made dark or creepy without over-the-top horror imagery, think again — DE666′s awesome logo tee does just that with its simple but elegant one-color design. There’s something bewitching about the surreal abstractness of the main logo image; it draws you in with its spidery shapes and lack of a real point of focus. This is a rare example of a one-color design that makes the most of its limited palette, and in fact succeeds because of it. Simply gorgeous.
I also love the way DE666 represents its name through the series of etched, rune-like abstract characters; it helps enhance the spooky, mysterious feel of the designs while serving as a subtle touch of branding.
I get a bit of a black metal vibe from DE666, especially with its focus on Satanic, anti-Christian, and dark forest imagery. The “Burn the Lies” tee, especially, gives me that feeling; it reminds me of a metal documentary I own in which they interviewed several Norwegian black metallers who were involved in church arson. This shirt seems like something they’d be proud to wear. I love the way contrast is used in this design — the white flames and graffiti stand out with power against the dark background. I don’t think I could ever have the guts to wear a shirt steeped in so much socioreligious commentary, but that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the design work!
I also wanted to give a plug to DE666′s gorgeous posters and prints, which combine elements of graphic design and haunting black and white photography. And at $5 and under, they’re simply a steal — I may have to get one or two of my own for my room.
