Carraway Clothing is an indie brand owned by Ryan Miller, and got started back in 2006. (So many new brands have been popping up each year, 2006 feels ancient by comparison!) The brand has achieved quite a bit of success since then, massing great sales online in addition to wholesale orders from stores as far away as Japan. Ryan also donates a portion of the profits to the great charity Invisible Children.
The shirts at Carraway have a bit of a hippie/60-70′s vibe to them, with well-known iconography like the peace sign prominently displayed alongside retro art styles and references to a certain notable album from that time period. In order to add his own facet to the theme, Ryan has deftly woven in Carraway’s snail mascot into almost all the designs. Sometimes the snail is the focus of the shirt, other times you can barely catch him perched atop a letter. It’s a cute and unique way to tie the brand together, considering not many clothing labels would choose a snail as their mark of recognition.
There’s something timeless about the album art on Joy Division’s “Unknown Pleasures”, which makes it so easy to parody in interesting ways. (Though it hasn’t seen quite as many spoofs as, say, the Experimental Jetset shirt and the “Stay Calm and Carry On” sign.) Carraway has done just that with its “Unknown Snails” tee, which blends images of the Carraway snails into the iconic white lines. I really like the way this design stays true to the original spirit of the art, but tweaks it just enough to offer a bit of humor.
“Open Your Eyes” is bereft of any brand imagery, but still manages to find its place in the overall theme with its distinctly “flower child” quality. There’s something deliciously retro about the pastel colors and the rough, grungy style of the lines. I find it intriguing that the shirt is called “Open Your Eyes”, but at the same time, the illustration has no eyes! It’s clear that other people share my love for this illustration, as it’s pretty much sold out in all sizes except girl’s medium and large.
Okay, so this isn’t really a t-shirt, but I couldn’t help but be charmed by this adorable necklace! It’s a well-designed product, too; it fits well with the brand theme and actually looks wearable. (You’d be surprised at how many indie brands churn out crap “accessories” for the sake of making themselves look more professional.)
