Arteefact is a fairly new t-shirt company from Greece, bringing with it a slew of stylish designs and a printing method rarely seen beyond the print-on-demand circle. Instead of screenprinting or digital printing, Arteefact opts for vinyl transfers — for the uninitiated, this means that whenever the Arteefact crew receives an order, they cut the design out of a thin vinyl and heat-press it onto the shirt. Every shirt is prepared to order; Arteefact keeps no stock. They also create custom garments on demand.
Now, to be perfectly honest, my past experiences with vinyl transfers hasn’t been the best — not to say that this printing method sucks, but I used to own a hoodie with a vinyl-pressed design on the back, and even with the thicker fleece fabric, I could feel the stiffness of the design. On thinner fabric, it would feel much heavier, not to mention it would obstruct the “breathability” of the shirt, which is pretty important in the hotter weather you’d usually be wearing a t-shirt in. Plus, the vinyl crumpled noticeably after I threw the hoodie in the wash for the first time. However, it’s entirely possible that the “50 microns thick” vinyl Arteefact boasts about is better than this, so don’t rule them out yet!
The technical limitations of vinyl transfer also mean that designs can’t exceed more than a few colors. It’s entirely possible to create stunning designs with a constrained palette, though, as the Arteefact designers deftly prove with their catalog. These designs make use of vector shapes and flat colors to great effect, resulting in slick, futuristic designs with a modern, minimalist feel. If you like Swiss graphic design, Arteefact’s tees will strike a chord with you.
“Determination” is a design made up of nothing but expertly arranged lines and circles, but it proves how a one-color print can be just as effective as a design produced with gradients and tricky CMYK process. The negative space in this design is its main pull — the space between the lines is visually interesting and helps emphasize the illusion of a three-dimensional sphere. This design is also available in green and yellow!
“Fullface” is another example from the Arteefact collection showing excellent use of simple lines and negative space, making the most out of the one-color palette. I love the mysterious, arty feel to this design — I’d feel very classy wearing it! It’s also available in white, though in that colorway the face silhouette doesn’t ‘pop’ as much. In fact, it’s interesting how much the design can change just by inverting the colors — in black, the face looks serene and mystical, while in white, it looks surprised!
