For one, I’ve bought a ton of new shirts in this year’s spring sales, so I can start doing photo reviews again! I’m really looking forward to showing you some of these awesome tees.
Today we’re proud to bring you a coupon and review of Fistful Apparel, a new brand on the t-shirt scene. When these guys contacted us, I knew I had to see if they were interested in doing a feature with us!
Fistful was founded by a trio of artists and designers inspired by various facets of international pop culture, including Japanese and Western comics, Mexican culture, and cult cinema. The fun, bold atmosphere you might expect from a mixture of those things is alive and well in Fistful brand, starting with their fantastic website. You’re immediately greeted with a bright magenta layout with a great piece of equally-bright superhero art on the main page. The fonts just scream, “COMICS!”
Their webstore is topped by the superb poster-like piece you see above, which helps underscore Fistful’s film and cartoon influences. And under that, you find the tees.
The straightforwardly-named “Dudes” is easily the strongest design in their catalog, not to say that the other shirts aren’t equally good-looking. This shirt espouses the Fistful feel with its bold color palette, cartoony style, and superb character design. I’ve never seen bright yellow and blue look so good on a t-shirt.
To top it all off, the Fistful folks included a bit of backstory for the characters depicted:
Meet Pete, Linc and Julie. And their flying cat and dog. This trio consisted of rich, long-haired Pete Cochran, Lincoln “Linc” Hayes from the tough streets of inner city Los Angeles, and beautiful flower child Julie Barnes, a runaway from San Francisco. They’re recruited by police captain Adam Greer for a covert unit that will help bridge the generation gap. They may have been the “fuzz,” but they were determined to never compromise their values. They were The Dudes!
I always love it when brand talk a bit about the story behind the shirt — or, in this case, the story behind the characters on the shirt — because it gives the design that much more meaning.
Looking for a good skull shirt? “Lonerider” may be for you. I like the choice of the tri-evergreen blank, a nice change of pace from the black shirts most skull designs show up on. (Plus tri-blends are incredibly comfortable.) The skull is done in a style that borders on horror, but refrains from crossing into that territory with the addition of the axe/blade icon and the lightning bolts. It ends up looking more comic-style than horror/gore, which should make it that much more wearable to those turned off by zombies bleeding green pus and eyeballs. Sadly, the light gray discharge print gets kind of lost in the teal color of the shirt, making it difficult to appreciate the insane amount of detail.
Fistful also ventures into the cuter side of cartoons with “Create“, a shirt that has a distinct La Fraise feel with some Japanese kawaii thrown in. Unlike the two shirts above, this tee is available in women’s sizes (click here for the men‘s version). According to the artist, Josh Agerstrand, this is what his creative process looks like. As an artist, I can certainly identify — coming up with a good idea usually occurs in an all-over-the-place fashion. I adore the color palette, which works fantastically with the heather black poly-cotton shirt.
