After strong Black Friday and Cyber Monday promos ($10 shirts) Threadless have been in touch to let you all know that the savings continue, as they’ve now added a 50% off coupon code valid on all shirts (40% off hoodies). This offer is valid until 6th December. In the end it’ll probably mean most shirts are $10 again, down from $20 but the savings could be bigger on older already discounted shirts and on premium select lines.

There’s something deeply charming about Threadless‘ throwback to the 90′s with their current sale, featuring garish colors, marquees and fonts which shall not be named. Of course, there’s also the fact that all shirts are $10 and all hoodies are 20% off, plus free shipping if you spend over $75 (which shouldn’t be that difficult)! I admit I haven’t really been staying on top of Threadless ever since they switched over to new blanks, but that won’t stop me from admiring some of the quality pieces they’ve been releasing lately. If you’re having trouble finding some of the better ones, scroll down for some of my own picks.

A lot of red tees are hit-or-miss just because the color is so in your face, but I feel these designs make artful use of the vibrant background, and would look great going into the fall.

Prefer something a little subtler? Here’s a cute retro character tee and a cool design perfect for Halloween.

Finally, we close with a design reminiscent of Imaginary Foundation’s surreal masterpieces, and a tee featuring a perfect combination of good color choice, vintage comic art, and classic pop culture.

Photo Review: Threadless Select (and a Future Coupon Code?)

Threadless caused quite the stir when they announced they were replacing their old Select system with a new ‘fashion’ line — some people love the new cuts and fabrics, others believe that at $35 apiece, they’re overpriced and targeting the wrong demographic. I tend to side with the latter opinion — good on Threadless if they can get customers to pay the higher price, it’s just not for me. For $40 ($35 + the cost of shipping), I could buy a lot more than one tee with fancy eco-friendly fabric and distressed printing.

Regardless, I really liked the look of the Select-ified “Funkalicious“, so thought I’d give the New Select a shot once Threadless announced their 20% off sale, which I combined with my $7 newsletter coupon. With shipping that still added up to just a little over $22.

In today’s edition of Photo Review, I’ll be focusing on just the shirt — everyone knows by now that Threadless has top-notch customer service, so there’s no need to rehash that. On the other hand, I’m sure there are a lot of folks wondering if the $35 is worth it.

According to the product description, the Select Funkalicious is printed on a shirt made of a “blend of organic cotton, recycled polyester, and rayon.” It’s also low-impact dyed, so you know this is one hell of an environmentally-friendly shirt. The fabric is fairly soft to the touch — compared to the American Apparel tri-blend shirt, I’d say this “eco tee” is slightly rougher and thicker in texture, but just barely. It’s still very soft and flexible compared to normal 100% cotton.

The print is actually much fainter than it appears in the photos — in reality, it’s more gray than white. Frankly I wouldn’t call this much of an issue, though, as it suits the whole ‘vintage’ look of the tee.

Finally, there’s a printed neck tag and something which doesn’t appear on any of Threadless’ other products: an embroidered monogram. It’s very subtle branding and you wouldn’t know it was there unless you knew to look for it. Definitely a good extra touch on Threadless’ part — it makes the product feel premium and worth its higher price.

So, is it worth it?

Unless you find yourself intensely moved by eco-friendly products, no, it probably isn’t. What you’re paying for here, essentially, is the fancy branding and a couple of extra flourishes, which is obvious only because Threadless doesn’t usually market itself as a high-end, premium-priced fashion label. The eco tee and embroidered monogram are nice and all, but I’d say I’d pay $30 tops for those features, if even that.

Then again, I’m a notorious bargain shopper and rarely pay full price for anything, so maybe I’m not the most reliable judge of whether or not a high-priced t-shirt is worth it.

Unfortunately, the coupon doesn’t work (I tried it for you), and according to the card it won’t come online until January. I thought this was a bit odd, handing out a coupon so far in advance, but hey I’m not complaining. By the time 2011 rolls around, I’ll be sure to plug the coupon again in case you forget.

Shirtspotting: Holebrain, Threadless, Randr

Yay, Shirtspotting is back! Take a look at these fine cotton beauties:

Most of the time, character tees don’t particularly appeal to me, but I must admit I have a special soft spot for the critters from Holebrain. There is just something refreshing about the minimalistic two/one color palettes consistent throughout all of the designs. My favorite thing about “Finger“, though, is the fine texturing mimicking fingertip whorls. They provide just the right amount of contrast to the flat, blocky shapes forming the little guy’s awe-inspiring beard and dapper hat. There’s also something quite endearing about the goofiness of the art — I’m pretty sure Holebrain’s designer and printer, Will, is the only person who take a concept as weird as a fingertip wearing a massive beard and spin it into an excellent, ultra-wearable tee. It’s shirts like these that make me wish mint didn’t look so bad on me!

I try to avoid spotlighting Threadless tees in Shirtspotting, if only because everyone and their mother know about Threadless by now, but I couldn’t help myself when I noticed that the wonderfully weird “And How Are You Feeling Today?” was reprinted for the Halloween sale. This is another great example of a shirt that makes me wish I could pull off the color of the blank (hot pink is right up there with mint green on the list of “Colors I Can’t Wear Without Looking Horribly Awkward”); I remember voting for its reprint several months back just because I felt it deserved another chance at glory. This design by Jan Avendano takes something we’re all familiar with — bottling up your anxiety, frustration, and anger behind a calm face — and transforms it into an evocative, spine-chilling illustration full of gorgeous details and great color use. If you thought bright pink couldn’t be used for a scary tee, think again — Jan Avendano proved otherwise.

Randr‘s “1979” is by far one of my favorite designs to come out of this fall’s new collections. This illustration weaves the image of a sexy, buxom woman with graceful white twists and curves. My favorite thing about this shirt is how everything in the illustration flows together like water, as the wave-like lines imply. The areas of black blend into the gray, and are broken up by the patterns of negative space. The watercolor-like textures add a touch of interest and help merge the figure of the woman in with the rest of the design. This shirt is also available in lime, but I think it works better in the white colorway.

Threadless Launches New Select Line

I’m kind of torn when it comes to Threadless‘ new Select line. On one hand, it’s interesting to see this company stray more towards what you might call “fashion” tees — there are a lot more “flattering” cuts for women, such as tank tops and dresses, and guys get v-necks and premium fabrics — but on the other, I miss the creativity of the old Select line. In the past, Threadless would commission well-known artists both from and beyond their community to create a shirt design based on whatever they wished. Some of these designs were mind blowing, others…not so much; there were many Select designs that failed to sell out more than a handful of sizes since they simply were not wearable to the mass market. (This stands out as a particularly good example.)

The “new” Select takes some of Threadless’ most popular, tried-and-true designs and reprints them on the new premium garments (tri blends, organic cotton, pima cotton, etc.) with minimalist palettes. As with the examples above, sometimes this produces really cool, unique results — these tees take the original designs and bring them back in far more sophisticated, mature color schemes. If you were around for Threadless’ collaboration with Gilt, it’s much of the same thing.

However, I tend to have a problem with the way Threadless has such a strong focus on its “classic” designs, which get reprints every few months while some of their more unique, truly creative pieces get left in the dust after they sell out. This only exacerbates that problem — I can only point out a few of the new Select pieces which truly stand out, especially since many have been visually reduced by the simpler color palette or excessive distressing. A lot of them, especially those found in the “Girly” section, seem like stuff I could find walking into any women’s clothing store at the mall. Instead of focusing on art and design, as the old Select did, this line seems to focus on the clothes.

These pieces aren’t cheap, either — they’re $35 dollars apiece, which is close to double the price of a normal Threadless tee. I’m guessing most of Threadless’ primary audience aren’t high-fashion gurus, which means that selling points like nicer cotton or a more stylish cut aren’t necessarily as important, especially to the male customers. (The female pieces seem to be getting a lot of positive attention — while I prefer standard t-shirts myself, I can see how many women would want more flattering styles.)

Overall, while I think this is an interesting business decision, it’s not something I’m terribly intrigued or impressed by. I like my tees no-frills and affordable. Nevertheless, I recognize there is a market for this idea, and I wouldn’t put it past Threadless to surprise me in the future!

Threadless Knocks It Out of the Park

I don’t remember the last time Threadless had a weekly release this strong. I like practically every piece in Monday’s newest tees, and that’s saying something.

It’s been a while since Threadless came out with any belt printed tees, so I was surprised to see the quirky “Tipi Man“ in the lineup. It’s not something I would ever wear, but I can definitely appreciate the amount of attention put into its creation. The color scheme — dark and light green on lilac — is unusual, but works. The background design is chock-full of detail, yet subtle enough to not overpower the simple central illustration. The pattern also extends to the back of the shirt, for those of you who complain about that common all-over print problem over at DBH.

“X-MENAGERIE” is a great follow-up to the Comic Con hype. The illustration is full of color, power, and excitement, especially near the top where the fire glow reflects off all the characters. The crisp linework and watercolor textures are just gorgeous, and furthermore they printed exceptionally well. This design is also available on an American Apparel Flex Fleece hoodie, which excites me — I own a blank Flex Fleece hoodie and it’s pretty much the most comfortable sweatshirt, ever.

“Swan Song” by Ross Zietz is a very simple, straightforward design. I actually find it to be a bit too simplistic for my liking — it doesn’t fill the shirt all that well thanks to its slender composition — but that isn’t to say it doesn’t work. Plus, as depicted above, it’s the first Threadless design to be offered on a new type of wide-neck American Apparel tee for girls.

“Color Theorists” is cute and clever. It combines adorable animal cartoons with a little artist in-joke. I love the slightly abstract/vintage style and the creative use of spot color. The artist actually cites Shutterstock as inspiration for his design, where he spotted the “search by color” icon. Not quite sure how that led into animals with cameras, monocles, and pipes, but I know from experience how winding the creative process is!

“When Mermaids Cry” is the second shirt of the week to have a traditional media look. The concept, composition and color are all lovely, but I find that the way the mermaids’ faces are drawn is not quite up to snuff, particularly that of the mermaid on the bottom. Artistic nitpicking aside, this is a beautiful idea and is sure to be a hit with Threadless’ female patrons.

Your eyes are immediately drawn to the bright lime tee used in “Fragmented Beauty”, another surprisingly artistic tee from this week’s offerings. I’m not quite sure what is happening in this design, but I can’t say I particularly care; the surreal, abstract style is just incredible, especially with the way it’s printed huge on the shirt. On the downside, the print seems to be cut off on the girls sizes, which doesn’t do any favors for the design.

The special comic tees are still available at the package price of $70, though it’s clear that it’s running low on stock in almost all sizes. I didn’t have the time to do so last week when it first launched, so I just want to take the time to acknowledge the genius of “Every Night I Have the Same Dream, Issue 2, Vol 1″ (whew, what a mouthful!). Out of all the shirts in this series, this shirt makes the biggest nod to comics and comic art. From the high-contrast artwork to the dramatic angle, to the speech bubbles, to the panels on the back of the shirt, this design is just a tremendous tribute to a classic cultural mainstay. Its loud presentation definitely isn’t for everyone, but there’s no doubt that this is just a superbly designed tee.
