Design By Humans is getting more and more generous with their sales, huh? We’ve gotten used to seeing regular $15 sales crop up, so leave it to the DBH crew to mix things up with an even better deal! All shirts are just $12 during this latest sale, which lasts until Sunday, September 26.

Top 24 Announced for DBH 10K Contest

It’s that time of the year, where talented artists from all over the world come together to compete for Design By Humans‘ fat $10,000 prize. They recently announced their top 24 finalists, which include a lot of really interesting, trend-bucking designs. Today, I’ll be covering the cream of the crop: designs that not only excel artistically, but actually look like something I’d want to wear. I think a lot of artists — especially on a site willing to print daring designs, like DBH — forget that flashier doesn’t always equal better, and often will stray into the realm of gaudiness. Sadly, I can spot a few shirts in the mix that already fall into this trap.

While muttley’s “Into the Light” doesn’t break many creative barriers, it looks damn good on a t-shirt. There is some excellent technical work at play here — sharp, art-deco like graphics stand strong against the brilliant light in the center and the dark background of the tee. The design fades well into the black tee, though it makes me wonder if DBH will be able to reproduce the subtle colors that make the fade so successful. Either way, this design’s got my vote — it’s stunningly beautiful without being excessive.

I also really like sebasebi’s “Deeply“. This is just a really lovely concept that I can see being popular with both male and female customers. The colors help give it that dream-like quality, in turn punching up the great sense of mood. The placement of the light blazing through the water is great, but the composition kind of falls short in that the direction of the light works counter intuitively against the placement of the woman at the bottom. Your eye is drawn down and left as you follow the light, but suddenly you’re brought back to the far right when you get to the lady and her frilly dress. It’s not a deal-killer, though, and this design is still beautiful the way it is.

My main worry — again — is that DBH will screw the printing up, as they did for quite a few of the trickier 10k prints last year. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.

“Black Romance” by Dzeri29 and WinterArtwork is my pick for those who prefer something a little more hardcore. Fantastic placement — I love how the girl’s hair wraps around the shoulder. The fine details of her tattoos strike an interesting contrast with the chunky lines found throughout the rest of the piece. If this prints, I hope DBH goes with the silver version found on the design’s page — it works a lot better with the simple palette.

And my top favorite? That would be “Red Run” by mitohapa — a mind-bendingly creative, stunningly gorgeous take on Japanese-style art. Not only that, but I can easily see DBH pulling off this print without screwing it up! The placement is incredible; I love how the pieces of the landscape wrap around the hem and middle of the tee, curving up to the bottom of the sleeve. The sun is well-placed on the upper-left of the chest, where it’s attracts interest without taking away from the rest of the design. The earthy grays and hot reds make for an unusual but ultimately successful marriage, especially against the bright white tee. I say that with some sadness because the fact that this is on white almost guarantees that I won’t wear it — for all its gorgeousness, I can’t pull off something this flashy. Nevertheless, it has my vote simply because it’s a great piece of art.

And hey, mitohapa — if you don’t win and are ever thinking of making this into a print, sign me up.

Sales at Snakes & Suits and DBH!

Snakes & Suits is holding a 25% off summer sale, plus the first 50 orders over $50 will get a free limited edition shirt! If you don’t know about this brand, they have some pretty neat logo shirts and cut and sew items. They just put out some new tanks as well, in case you’re suffering horrific summer temperatures as I am!

I’m kind of late with this one, so I’m not sure how much longer it will last, but Design By Humans is having a great sale! Every shirt is $15 and under, with many of the older shirts priced at $7. Naturally, all the best designs are at the higher price points, but $15 for a DBH shirt is still pretty damn good.

Actually, scratch that, I just took a look at the catalog and there are actually a lot of really good $10 shirts, even though the vast majority of them are sold out in all but the largest sizes. If you wear L or XL you’ll be in for a treat.

A pair of really beautiful modern art style tees, and only $10! Both “A Photographic Memory” and “believe in inertia” are both superbly designed and very eye-catching. Both of these shirts are only available in the larger sizes at this point.

For that matter, there are a lot of good $12 shirts as well. It’s just the $7 selection that kind of suffers, but what else do you expect.

Another $15 Design By Humans Sale

Yes, my friends, it’s another Design By Humans $15 sale! Man, they’ve been doing a lot of these lately. That said, I’m psyched to see them move away from the tiered pricing-type sales where all the best shirts were only discounted by a few bucks. If you’ve got your eye on one of those $24 beauties, this is the time to jump!

This makes me all the more sad that my debit card won’t work with DBH. Get Paypal already, guys!

And just because I haven’t done a DBH-oriented post in a long time, here are some super-cool tees I’d love to put in my cart and purchase, but can’t! But you (most likely) can, so here we go:

Uzi Emperado mashes up two of Japan’s most famous cultural traditions in the delightfully energetic “Sushi Break“, while muttley goes for a more tranquil look with his “Only Time.”

Rock on! biotwist’s “Rock the Labyrinth” is the perfect tee for drawing stares wherever you go. (In the good way, of course!) Mathiole’s “Those old cliches” has the same eye-popping effect with its brilliant watercolor hues and quirky concept. Plus, it’s printed on white American Apparel tees, in case you like that sort of thing.

Incredible shades of blue come together on the hilarious, but wonderfully executed “Deernapping” by lastsoundtrack. DBH really shows its belt-printing stuff, though, in SPYKEEE’s “Pisces beauty”, where the colors are so subtle and painterly you’ll find it hard to believe that it was screenprinted.

Oh, my fellow female t-shirt fans — although I’ve only used the female models for the shirts above, you may rejoice knowing that all of the designs in this post are available in women’s sizes. It was about time they cut out that “We’re gonna print this for guys only, deal with it” crap.

Of course, this wouldn’t be a DBH post without mention of the endless 10% discount codes generated by the site. It’s not much, but at least it’ll absorb a bit of the shipping.

Zen Garden 2.0 at Design by Humans

You can always expect Design By Humans to scoop up the neat, crazy-placement designs no one else will even think of printing. This shirt is actually somewhat old, but that has no impact on how cool its design is. Created by ninthWheel, it’s both original and quite fashionable. The simple one-color print looks great against the pale silver tee, and helps enhance the modern art look. The placement is top-notch — I love how the lines fill the top of the shirt, and the little rake is shown in the act of filling up the bottom. It gives the piece a sense of action and movement, bringing it to life. The black rocks prevent the lines from becoming too dizzying by breaking up the space; they also act as points of interest drawing your eye across the chest of the shirt. It’s subtle but important to the success of the piece.

Oh, and unlike my last DBH pick, zerobriant’s incredible “Death by Stealth“, it’s actually available for us ladies! DBH has skimped on printing women’s sizes recently, which is beyond disappointing for a company that has usually excelled in this area. The designs we do get tend to fall on the less exciting, less daring side, so it’s wonderful to see a shirt as original as “Zen Garden 2.0″ break the mold.

“Death by Stealth” at Design By Humans

Let me preface this by saying the following: I LOVE ninjas.

Hence, why I’m excited to see zerobriant’s latest Design By Humans masterpiece, “Death by Stealth“. (And simultaneously disappointed by the glaring lack of women’s sizes. Why do you do this to me, DBH?!) Like the rest of zerobriant’s work, this piece is distinguished by the watercolor-like style. What elevates it above his previous prints, “Once in a Blue Moon” and “Freedom Fighter“, is the stunning execution. Especially of note is the beautiful use of negative space to create the shadowy image of the ninja, almost as if he’s melting into the darkness. Just perfect.

The red circle/sun in the background not only adds a spot of contrast, but helps form the striking red/white/black color scheme. It also alludes to the ninja’s Japanese background. The ninja’s shadow against the red, and the splash of crimson on his chest, help break up the color and create interest. Notice also the various ninja weapons arrayed at the bottom of the piece.

Might I also mention that the placement is fantastic? I love how the sword blade extends up to the neck.

Design By Humans prices LOWERED!

Oh my! I just received a Design By Humans newsletter with an exciting update. Now, instead of having $20 and $25 shirts, all shirts will be priced from $15 to $21. This is great news, because I always felt that the $25 price point was too high to justify frequent purchases. Now they cost about the same as Threadless shirts, which I’m sure will open them up to a much larger customer base. The $21 shirts are generally the all-over prints, and all things considered it’s a pretty good price for the stunner you will get in return.

It certainly helps that lately, there’s been an influx of sweet DBH designs. Just take a look at “Fallen Industry“, which is possibly one of the most gorgeous all-over designs I’ve seen in a while. I’m loving the contrast between the brilliant cyan and yellow sky and the grungy, black image of the factory. I get a very “urban/streetwear” type of vibe from this tee; furthermore, I can see it being a great addition to a summer wardrobe. This shirt is on the upper end of the scale at $21.

Some searching showed that only two shirts are on the other end of the spectrum at $15. I don’t find either of the designs to be particularly noteworthy, so instead I’ll present one of the $17 tees. “2050” is a haunting, mysterious piece which unfortunately got shafted by a supply problem DBH encountered over the summer. (Hence why only the large sizes are available.) It has elements of the 80’s horror style, but the limited, well-chosen white and green color scheme keeps it from being too loud or dark. I like how the design appears to tell a story, leaving you wondering just what happened to this unfortunate astronaut.
