Photo Review: Play by laFraise

Claudia, a rep from laFraise, was kind enough to send me a free tee after I posted about the Play shirt, so I thought I’d return the favor by showing it off here. Turns out laFraise had some spare Women’s Smalls tucked away for this design (or maybe some people just decided to return it), and I was lucky enough to score one of them. I believe this is the first package I’ve ever received from Germany — exciting!

At A Glance

laFraise is Europe’s leading t-shirt design contest — in other words, the European Threadless — and a part of Spreadshirt, a print-on-demand company you probably know of. Designs are put up for vote for one week, and each week laFraise selects a new batch of designs to be printed in limited runs of 500 shirts each. Designers can create artwork for a “Classic” competition (normal t-shirts), or a “Mademoiselle” competition (women’s tops). Winners get €1,000 if they are picked for print.

The designs are playful, often employing an anthropomorphic and cartoony style. They are well chosen and visually attractive. Sadly, the €19 (~$28) asking price, combined with the cost of US shipping, has kept me from purchasing anything from laFraise — hence, why I’m so thrilled to get this little freebie. Thanks again, laFraise!

The Shirt

This design was printed on what looks to be a custom-cut tee. It’s made of organic cotton and similar to American Apparel in fit and cut — maybe even a bit snugger. It’s just as soft, too, and feels wonderful against the skin. I like the natural-looking beige color.

The print is especially impressive. The scientific illustration style demands a lot of detail, and this image is filled with them. Every single tiny line is printed crisply and cleanly, with a gorgeous result. The ink is soft and lightweight as well; I barely feel it when wearing the shirt. The red is bold and the black is dark. However, I wish the whole thing was a smidge larger on the tee.

Shipping and Service

My shirt came in a little over a week, which is pretty good for international shipping. It came with a custom hangtag with some copy about laFraise’s organic tees, and a sewn neck tag. It was packaged neatly in a clear plastic bag. The outer packaging was a standard paper envelope with laFraise’s logo — this is probably the only time I’ve received a t-shirt in something that wasn’t a mailing bag.

I can’t comment adequately on customer service, since I didn’t go through the usual buying process for this tee. However, I’ve dealt with Spreadshirt before, and I can vouch that their customer service is excellent, so I wouldn’t be surprised if that extended to laFraise as well.

Closing Comments

laFraise not only picks excellent designs, but gives them the quality prints they deserve. And on super-soft tees at that! The €19 + international shipping cost is, unfortunately, too high to justify buying more from them at this point, but I know I’ll keep laFraise in mind next time I have extra cash.

Play at La Fraise

Aaargh, so disappointed this tee at La Fraise is pretty much sold out! (Only remaining size is Women’s Large) The graphic — a parody of the scientific illustrations found in old biology books — is a really clever take on the famous Mario mushrooms that have become rather ubiquitous in the gaming t-shirt world. The best part about it, though, is that it’s subtle — personally, I don’t see how even proud gamers can go around wearing this kind of cotton barf on their chests. This tee is also environmentally-friendly in that it’s made of organic cotton and printed using ecofriendly water-based inks!

I don’t know if La Fraise reprints, but I sure hope they do. I’d love to add this shirt to my collection.

EDIT: Thanks to Rude Retro for pointing out that La Fraise only prints 500 of each design! And then it goes back to the designer, so here’s hoping we’ll see it elsewhere.

Battle of the Battles

Two big contest winners this week, both laFraises 15k contest and DBH 10k. Overall I prefered the winners at DBH, but then I don’t like their 1st place winner its too mechanical/industrial for my tastes.

I think the laFraise Bollywood chewing gum is beautiful. I wouldn’t wear in Mens, but for women, or as a print, count me in. So I guess its 1-1 for me in the battle of these two big prize battles, but both winners very much match the style of their communities and signatures prints so direct comparison is not really possible.

Lafraise 15k contest round 2

Lafraise recently announced the 12 designs that made it through to round two of their massive €15k prize contest. One of the biggest prizes in t-shirt design history. The great thing about these contests, is that while there is one lucky winner in reality a number of the designs will be printed, the big prizes attract the better designers, so the company gets a slew of great designs to print. I really like this new lafraise design, its a little on the girly side for me to wear, but it reminds me of those great lovestory-come-roadmovies like True Romance, one of my all time favourite movies. I haven’t watched it in years, come to think of it.

Impressed by DBH humans recently announced $10k contest? Prepare to be impressed again, only even more… La Fraise have announced what must be one of the biggest prizes in recent design contest memory (since Threadless’ Bestees design of the year which i awarded $20k I guess), one lucky designer will scoop up €15k in a special contest. Converting that into your funny $ system, that’s an incredible $20,930! Which as far as I know makes it the biggest ever prize in the design contest world?

Apparently in 2008 the average yearly wage for a woman was $35k (source: Wikipedia), so winning this one contest alone would net you over half a years average US salary, in conclusion – it’s mega.

You might be thinking oh yeah that’s nice, but who are these lafraise guys, am I going to get the same sort of exposure as I would by winning DBH or Threadless. Worry not, you’ll do just fine, la Fraise is the largest design contest in Europe and its reputation is growing in other markets. 2000 people will wear your shirt (lafraise is now shipping pretty much worldwide), and you can be sure of some good coverage of a contest this big.
