Where the Women’s Sizes Are

As a female t-shirt fan, I understand it’s not always in every brand’s financial interests to print on ladies’ tees, which usually don’t sell half as well as unisex/men’s shirts. At the same time, it’s mighty frustrating to stumble across an incredible design only to discover that there aren’t women’s sizes! Since I am petite, men’s Smalls or even X-Smalls usually don’t look all to flattering on me, and I will often pass on a cool shirt if it isn’t offered in my size. (Call it vanity, but I like wearing shirts that actually fit me!) Even more frustratingly, a few big companies have recently been giving up on printing women’s sizes for some or most of their designs. (I’m looking at you, Design By Humans and Busted Tees!)

I’m not too sure how many ladies read this blog, but for those of you out there, I know your pain. That said, I’ve compiled a list of t-shirt companies which do the following:

Print women’s sizes for all of their designs
Refrain from the irritating “blue for boys, pink for girls” thing by printing the same colors for both men’s and women’s sizes

I will also point out if any companies stock female-flattering styles such as v-necks, scoop necks, and the like. I myself prefer the basic American Apparel 2102 above all else, but I know these styles are a common request from female buyers so I’ll make a special note of them.

New Brand: Lady Umbrella

It’s not often that we get to feature a t-shirt company geared specifically towards people of the fairer sex. Lady Umbrella, a brand-new company out of Dublin, Ireland, does just that. The custom-cut tees are styled especially for women, with scoop and v-necks and cap sleeves. The fabric is brightly colored — you won’t find any black or dark gray tees here. The designs are the work of Spanish designer Elena Montes Casado, and prominently feature the eponymous umbrella-headed woman. The illustrations kind of remind me of old children’s picture books and have a playful, somewhat abstract feel to them.

Like many European fashion brands, the shirts are on the expensive side at €24.99, which is actually an intro price. On the upside, Lady Umbrella offers free worldwide shipping, so you won’t be gouged by international delivery expenses. You can also save 10% with the never-expiring code, lufblove!

Personally, as a woman, I prefer t-shirts that aren’t so specifically styled for my gender — I don’t like cap sleeves or scoop necks on my tees, and the designs I take an interest in tend to be aimed at guys or a gender-neutral market. The price is also something I can’t really afford, with the USD equivalent coming to just a little under $34. However, I know I regularly see female commenters complaining about the lack of t-shirts with designs or cuts for women, so if you’re one of those ladies, I recommend checking these guys out!

They call it the Serendipitee T-Shirt – you pay them 10 bucks, let them know your size and they then choose a tee from over 300 different available DBH shirts (they promise the selection isn’t limited to just slow sellers). The tee that you’ll receive will be entirely in the hands of fate (better known as that dude at DBH that’s in charge of packing and shipping orders).

For fans of Design By Humans and regular customers, this might be something that would be appealing because they know the DBH style, generally like their stuff and will probably like whatever random tee they receive. I think the US should have a Red Nose Day equivalent! It sounds like so much fun and is for a great cause. If you’re not familiar with Red Nose Day, basically, people do funny things to help raise money to fight poverty in the UK and abroad. This year, Red Nose Day will take place on March 13, you can find all the information that you need about this charitable cause here – they even give you tips on some things you can do to help the cause!

The global recession and in particular the UK’s economic meltdown does have one positive outcome that isn’t often reported – cheaper t-shirts for foreigners. Yep, with our rock bottom UK pound £ you overseas types can remotely peruse our fine British wares from over yonder and purchase yourself some new styles at an affordable, at long last. Designer Jonathan Yule decided to honor his favorite font, Helvetica, with this creation. He calls it Hellbotica, which is pretty clever if you ask me. The design is very unique and I doubt your going to find anything else like it. Not only does it come in red, but you can get this shirt in charcoal. I personally prefer the red one.

This is one of the best shirts I’ve seen in a long time. I don’t really know where to start! Its called Internets for Men and contains loads of well known meme’s. For starters you’ve got Batman yodelling. I never thought I would live to see the day. How about the dog from MTV’s Rob and Big rocking the skateboard? Thats pretty cool. I can’t say for sure, but I think that the bottle of pop at the top of the shirt is referring to the mentos explosion trick. Thats a great addition to the shirt. I might even buy this one myself, I’m very impressed. You and your friends can have many fun hours racking your memories trying to remember all those famous for 5 minutes internet memes you’ve wasted hours of your employers’ time watching.
