Wrapping up the last of March’s Exclusive Deals, we have Concrete Rocket! This brand-new company was started by Budi Satria Kwan (AKA radiomode), a decorated designer who has been printed at many t-shirt sites, including a hefty handful of wins at Threadless. Seriously, just go look at how many prints he has. Other credits include Design by Humans, Graniph, and La Fraise, and that’s just three out of many.
You may recognize this Threadless favorite by Budi, which is sadly out of stock at this time.
Whereas the main body of Budi’s work is widely varied in style and subject matter, Concrete Rocket has a very defined look. These shirts lean on the minimalistic side, employing silhouettes and simple 1-2 color prints against brightly-colored tees. They have kind of a Fullbleed aura about them — they’re artistic, whimsical, and very, very wearable. The unified style is good for brand-building, further solidified by the professional-looking layout.
Budi has decided to start out small with just six designs, three of them recently added. My favorite is “Imagination Unlimited“. Yellow tees aren’t my thing, but I really dig the style of this piece. The colors play together well and create a happy, light-hearted mood. The contrast between the dark, textured style of the man and picture frame, versus the flat white tree and birds, is quite interesting.
Additionally, each shirt is accompanied by a quote. I think this is a great idea because it adds some depth and story to the designs. “Imagination Unlimited”, appropriately, is paired by a quote from Salvador Dali: “A true artist is not one who is inspired, but one who inspires others.”
Another fave is “Just Breathe“, a design commenting on the rampant destruction of our environment. The mood in this piece is great; I love the somber feel, the juxtaposition of the innocent little girl and the gas mask. I love the black/white contrast as well. Sadly, the black-on-black print isn’t exactly successful, as it makes it very difficult to make out the details of the girl’s head and body. I had to view the zoomed-in image to see these details for myself.
