FMT is different from most other major sites in that it uses DTG (direct-to-garment) printing for its shirts. I’ve only ever seen the method at work on shirts ordered from Cafepress, Spreadshirt, etc so I can’t say I have the best opinion of DTG, but from the product photos it looks pretty damn impressive. That and I wouldn’t be surprised if FMT employs a much higher-end machine, especially since they seem to be able to pull off some huge oversized prints.
As I said before, the designs are top-class. They’re printed huge and often employ creative placement. Moreover, one of the main advantages of DTG — the lack of a color limit — ensures that gradients are with full, beautiful color fades. This allows for some truly stunning results.
My favorite FMT shirt has always been “Zoidpunk“, the_jcw’s tribute to Futurama. Despite the inspiration, you don’t need to be a fan of the show to appreciate this tee. I love pretty much everything about it — the placement, the painterly style, the color palette, and the detailed mechanical drawings near the top. Really great stuff.
Being the space geek I am, I also dig Denny Unger’s “Uncharted Space“, a stunning example of the capabilities of DTG. The print extends from the neckline to the hem, and is beautifully rendered. I love how the slash of blue sweeps across your chest in an attractive and interesting way.
