I’m not a fan of most pop-culture-reference designs, as I find most of them to be rather unimaginative. I admit I make a special exception for video game shirts, since I’ve breathed and loved gaming since my early years. Even then, though, I require my game shirts to be visually appealing or witty.
Hence, why lucky1988’s “Ancient Egyptian Plumber“, which came in second place for Woot’s Ancient Egypt Derby, became the first Woot shirt I purchased in months. It’s certainly not the most “artistic” of designs, heck I’d even concede that it isn’t all that original, but I dig the execution. The flat ancient Egyptian art style works almost ingeniously well with 8-bit Mario, and I love the little touches that make this piece so “Egyptian”, such as the hieroglyphs that are actually classic Mario items, the earthy color scheme, the stylized eye, and the gold collar. I’d say it’s worth the $10 price.
I’m feeling kind of “meh” at the other top-placing designs in this Derby — ancient Egypt is a great theme and has a lot of potential for interesting, imaginative visuals, but I feel that very few of the entries actually took advantage of that. I wasn’t much of a fan of the first-place winner, and I’m not sure if I’d actually go for any of the remaining designs.
You can get “Ancient Egyptian Plumber” for $10 until the end of today, after which it’s $15!
