Here’s a good deal for you folks — use the code HAPPY2010 to save 30% on all Cameesa tees until January 21! The above shirt, “Listen to the B-Side“, is one of my personal faves and is $17.50 after the discount.
I’m also a big fan of “Take Me To Your Reader“, a really clever play on alien abduction imagery. I adore the art style, which reminds me of the whimsical illustrations often found in children’s/youth novels.
The email bearing this coupon code also brought some news regarding Cameesa’s much-discussed “crowdsourcing” model. Looks like they’ll be changing around things in the coming year — you can view the message in a forum post here.
Myself, I’m glad to see that Cameesa is ditching their old support system. There simply wasn’t enough customer interest to keep it running at a desirable pace; only a handful of designs were fully “supported” (meaning enough people put a down payment on the shirt, which got it printed), and many others were left hanging at a partially-supported amount for months. Cameesa had to raise the support amount — making it even less attractive — to deal with designer rewards and supporter dividends. Shirt prices also jumped to ~$25 — Cameesa tried to switch to a cheaper brand, but eventually returned to American Apparel after customer backlash.
I like a lot of the new ideas proposed, especially the part stating that supporters will not be charged until the design is fully supported. Also, the lack of dividends (which provided extremely minimal payout to begin with) will allow prices on shirts and supports to drop. What I don’t like is the idea of taking away their storefront, and reducing the site to supporting a single shirt design every week, after which the design will no longer be available. We already have enough of those kinds of sites.
Maybe, by doing this, Cameesa can drum up enough interest to power their crowdsourcing system. With the high up-front costs and no guarantee that a supporter would ever actually get the shirt they were charged for, I’m not at all surprised that things fell flat. Hopefully, these changes will allow the site to really grow in 2010!
