Hey Tee-Junction, as some of you who read my personal blog may know – I get about a bit. No, not like that, I mean I like to travel! I’ve been living in New Zealand for the past year, which was somewhat of an accident following some months of travel in Asia. I’m now moving back to Germany, which is where I used to live and on the way I’m stopping in Japan for 10 days, I’m writing this post from my hotel lobby in Shinjuku, Tokyo which is where they filmed Lost in Translation.
I’ve always wanted to go to Japan, because I always thought it was as close to using the forward button on a time machine as possible, baring in mind we’re still a little behind sci-fi on those little beauties. Now I am here I’ve reformed my view on Japan being the technological future of all humanity, it’s more a weird, fun, little place where they’ve automated and developed technology that you absolutely don’t need, like the robo-potty toilet, humping dog usb sticks, automatic taxi doors, flashing video/neon signs.
Here is a video of my giving a tour round a capsule hotel:
It’s been a great 10 days or so for me and my girlfriend Annett who’ve wandered around the streets in a daze, rode bicycles in Kyoto, visited a love hotel in Osaka, found a shop where you can buy underwear pre-worn by japanese girls, been to the International Manga museum in Kyoto, visited a Christian and Mental Asylum themed bars in Tokyo and more that I’ve forgotten, but will be handily documented in my photos.
T-shirt wise, I’ve been a little disappointed. It seems the Japanese are going crazy for Western inspired streetwear/vintagewear. So there are loads of vintage, stores selling California surf style clothing, I’m sure there’s much more authentic Japanese shopping available and I plan to do some more tomorrow on our last day. There are also Japanese shops for well known international brands like X-large and Graniph (who wouldn’t let me take photos).
Here is a photo album of some of the clothing related images I’ve taken.
