Throughout the history of the internet, geeks have been squaring off on internet message boards on one of the most divisive subjects:
What would happen if Darth Vader and the Galactic Empire took on Kirk, Picard and the Federation?
Comparative analyses have been made of the relative destructive power of the Enterprise vs. the Death Star, phasers have been compared to blasters, the efficacy of warp drive vs. hyperspace discussed, and odds laid on a fictitious Roddenberry vs. Lucas grudge match.
The general consensus seems to be that if it ever came to blows the Galactic Empire would win by a country mile, using a combination of superior technology and sheer weight of numbers – though the following video sees things slightly differently.
One aspect of the debate still remains unpondered:
Which franchise has inspired the best t-shirts?
As Harry Hill would point out, there’s only one way to find out! FIIIIGHT!!!
Category #1: Costume Tees
Advertise your alliance with the Federation with this Star Trek uniform – just don’t be surprised if you don’t survive the second act.
Time to dust off your bowcaster and do your best wookie impression. Go on, have a go – you know you want to.
Verdict: The average redshirt has the life expectancy of a mayfly, his life a sacrifice to plot development, whereas Chewbacca is an essential part of the crew of the smuggling vessel that made the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs. First round to Star Wars!
Category #2: Crew
Kirk, Spock, Scottie and Bones against the backdrop of the Enterprise battling an unknown enemy above an alien world, in photographic detail.
Our heroes find themselves battling the Empire on the planet Hoth; the villainous Vader looks on.
Verdict: With a personal endorsement from Megan Fox, it’s got to be another win for Star Wars!
Category #3: The Spaceships
Open a hailing frequency, drop the shields, ready torpedoes, and have Beverly meet me in my ready room. Make it so, number one!
Things were much less organised on the Millenium Falcon, not least because most of the time they were being blown out of the sky by Imperial forces. Without the benefit of a few weeks in spacedock, repairs were done on a running basis – leading to some narrow escapes, and the ship’s “rustbucket” reputation.
Verdict: Star Trek gets a point on the board for Picard’s sheer number of catchphrases, and brilliantly buffed bonce!
Conclusion:
I make it 2 – 1 in favour of Star Wars – though I’d love to hear your opinions in the comments section.
