I have to say, this is easily the best of Randr’s releases thus far. Regulars will know that I’m a huge fan of 410 BC’s use of classical art styles combined with a modern design sensibility, and I get a very similar vibe from this line. The colors are cooler and muted, with lots of grays, blues and blacks. The designs are classier and more mature than the brightly-colored horror-themed pieces from their last line.
My favorite shirt is “Snake“, a tee with a pretty self-explanatory title. The snake is beautifully drawn; the close-up shots reveal a wealth of detail and careful shading. The coils are posed in an interesting manner, almost in an “S” or figure eight shape. It’s also available in two colorways, though sadly the dark gray version isn’t available for ladies. I still like the heather gray one, though, and definitely will be getting myself one next time Randr has a sale.
I’ve always been interested in mythology and religious iconography, so I was excited to see this shirt featuring Baphomet, the Horned God, a well-known representation of paganism and the devil. The centerpiece of this design is by no means original, but it’s nice to finally see this haunting, classic image finally make it onto a shirt. The “cinder” shirt — a nice, muted reddish-brown — makes an excellent backdrop for the demonic figure, accentuating the ancient quality of the image. The banner text (and the title of the design) translates to “let them hate provided they fear” — at least according to an online translator — and is incredibly appropriate for the design.
This tee would be an insta-buy for me if it wasn’t for the fact that this design alone isn’t offered in women’s sizes! Argh!
On that note, I have to say I’m somewhat turned off by the fact that many of the prints are way, way too big on some of the women’s shirts. Look at the female models for “Rise of the Enemy” and “Shrine“, among others. The design ends up looking cramped and messy when it isn’t given the negative space needed to be attractive.
Overall, I’d say the line is pretty good, despite some disappointments as a prospective female buyer. If you wear unisex sizes, I do not hesitate to tell you to go right for these tees, as there is no doubt in my mind they are fantastic.
