UPDATE: Added photos of me wearing the shirt.
This week, I review Imaginary Foundation, a name most t-shirt fans will probably recognize. I saved up just so I could buy a long-time favorite, “Astrosurf“. Here’s a tip: if you find your interest piqued by the end of this review, know that you can get free domestic shipping until the end of December! A lot of older tees are also on sale for half the regular price.
At a Glance
Imaginary Foundation is a premium-priced line known for its creative collages of photographic and computer-generated 3D images. The results are beautiful, striking tees quite unlike anything you’ll ever see. At $30 per shirt, Imaginary Foundation products are not very affordable, but the quality is well worth what you pay.
The layout is rather plain and nondescript, which is surprisingly considering the strong sense of aesthetics found in the products. However, it’s easy to navigate and straightforward, which isn’t ever a bad thing.
The Shirt
“Astrosurf” is a classic IF design I’m really excited to finally own. This eclectic all-over print features an astronaut riding a huge wave! It’s a fun, eye-catching piece heavy on brilliant blue and turquoise hues. The blue-to-white fade on the crest of the wave is particularly gorgeous.
Despite the size of the print, the shirt feels surprisingly soft and flexible. It was a bit stiff fresh out of the package, but after washing and wearing it once, I can barely feel the ink. As is to be expected with all-over prints, there are some imperfections, namely on the sleeves, shoulders, and neck where the screen could not make full contact. However, these flaws do little to mar the sweeping beauty of the image, which looks absolutely incredible from a distance. The American Apparel blank is, of course, unfailingly comfortable as always.
The shirt also comes with a large custom neck tag and a smaller tag sewn onto the hem.
Shipping and Service
I received my package a mere day after it was shipped (about four days after I placed the order), which is pretty amazing considering Imaginary Foundation is located across the country from me.
The shirt was packaged in a clear plastic bag, which in turn was stuffed into a standard Priority Mail envelope.
Nice, efficient, no-frills shipping. Color me satisfied.
Closing Thoughts
Imaginary Foundation tees are expensive, but this is one case where I can say that you definitely get the bang for your 30 bucks.
