Oh my, Imaginary Foundation. These guys never cease to amaze. They’ve put up a small batch of new tees that are just as visually and conceptually astounding as past releases. Part collage and part surrealism, Imaginary Foundation designs are truly the pinnacle of art on a t-shirt. I love the combination of regular ideas/people with stunning computer-generated art and bizarre situations.
“Gutter” is one of my favorites from the new releases, featuring a powerful image with a good message to live by: “We are all in the gutter. But some of us are looking up at the stars.” As much as I like the message, I feel that it somewhat detracts from the art, and would be better placed on the back of the shirt. I love the use of the blue CG art over the astronaut’s head, and the photographic detail and lighting on the ground/gutter is just fantastic. I’d definitely consider buying this if I had the $30 to spare.
“Balance” is another favorite, if only for the beautiful choice of colors. The royal blue and bright orange, combined with the softer multicolored hues in the outer curve of the shape, form a striking picture. I like the type a lot more in this piece; it’s simpler and suits the image it accompanies. And if you want something more muted but just as pretty, they have this design in a Charcoal shirt as well.
Last but not least, I was pleased to see that Imaginary Foundation decided to reprint a shirt that made me gasp the first time I saw it: “Astrosurf“. This all-over print features one of IF’s much-loved astronauts surfing! “Astronauts surfing” is probably something of a cliche in the t-shirt design by now, but as always, IF manages to stun. The scale is one of the best parts, allowing you to see the grandeur of the wave compared to its minuscule rider. Sadly, a lot of depth and color from the original art is lost in the tee print, but it’s a beautiful thing either way.
